The Lancashire Women & Newborn Centre was purpose built to provide one of the most advanced units of its kind in the UK. Sitting on the existing Burnley General Hospital site, it provides centralised state-of-the-art maternity services with the best possible care.

The Centre features LDRP suites (labour, delivery, recovery, postpartum), which promote the value of family togetherness and allow the entire birthing process to take place in one room.

Service solution.

A large number of existing services had to be dealt with before construction could start. In collaboration with the contractor and trust estates team, we gained in-depth knowledge of the issues and developed a strategy to divert services to other buildings. Our solution meant disruptions were kept to a minimum and the new facility was constructed as efficiently as possible.

Healthcare with heart.

Our brief was also to limit the 8,500 metre-squared building’s energy use while providing modern, resilient engineering services that met the building’s clinical requirements. We worked collaboratively throughout the project with the contractor, end-user client and professional team to create a low-energy solution. The result is a state-of-the-art, future-proofed environment with impressively low operating costs.

Having no open wards was a huge step forward for the NHS Trust, and this wellbeing focus also came with its engineering challenges. Our challenge was to ensure services were integrated into the building’s interior design to ensure the space felt minimally clinical.
