A place of calm and convalescence.

The importance of a tranquil, functional environment and the provision of effective skilled nursing support for mental health facilities cannot be overstated.

Our recent work at the highly commended Cefn Coed Hospital formed part of Reshaping Mental Health Services Swansea (RMHSS) – a development strategy to provide new, improved mental health services in Swansea.

Tailored spaces.

The project consisted of two phases. The initial phase involved the development of a new 18-bed rehabilitation unit that focuses on helping patients increase their independence before they return to the wider community. The second phase was three 20-bed wards providing care for older people with dementia, and featured a Snoezelen room – a sensory calm room to relax patients. These purpose-built, modern spaces were formed around a ‘wandering loop’ that allows patients to safely walk outside and connect with the green surroundings.

A healing environment.

Our approach was to design a low-energy and low-maintenance solution. We crafted a standalone energy centre that would serve the development perfectly and allow for phased delivery. We also added additional sustainable features through a combined heat and power system and rainwater harvesting. It was imperative that these MEP services didn’t deviate from the calm and welcoming vision for the space. Our engineers worked in tandem with our Acoustics team to ensure any noise was as mitigated as possible – making for a truly a secure, homely and relaxed environment for patients.
