Port Talbot Justice Court.
Wales, UK
An Excellent verdict.
Port Talbot’s brand new Justice Centre has breathed new life into the old dock area it’s located on. Situated at the entrance to a 16-acre redevelopment site, it has paved the way for a range of other major developments in the area, as part of a proposed regeneration programme.
Better served.
The new-build Justice Centre replaced the town’s magistrates court and now provides additional legal services, including a tribunal hearing centre serving Neath and Swansea in addition to Port Talbot, as well as a secure wing and an Informal Youth Court, plus two-storey Central Fines Unit (CFU) and office.
Sustainable future.
Achieving BREEAM Excellent was a prerequisite of the brief from HM Courts and Tribunals Service. We designed a sustainability strategy based on the first principles of sustainable design: orientation, minimisation of solar gain, natural ventilation, thermal efficiency, and plant and services efficiency.
The building also features a super-insulated and airtight façade, enhanced daylighting to reduce reliance on artificial lighting, grey-water recycling, roof-mounted solar panels for hot water, and an air-source heat pump. These, along with other solutions meant the building attained an impressive EPC rating of 27 along with BREEAM Excellent – recognising the space for not only supporting the Ministry of Justice’s Green Plan, but also enhancing the user experience and health & wellbeing.
