A redevelopment worthy of its predecessor.

The new Westminster Magistrates Courts replaced the famous courts at Bow Street and Horseferry Road. This development also incorporates a remodel of the existing Marylebone Road Courts site, which is London’s oldest functioning law court.

The scheme comprised 10 new Magistrates courtrooms together with supporting accommodation.

Sustainable focus.

A key part of the brief was to incorporate sustainable solutions where appropriate. Our design featured an embedded coil-cooled slab linked to deep boreholes for aquifer coupled free cooling. This solution, in conjunction with low-energy design solutions throughout, helped to deliver low and zero-carbon technologies that exceed the mandatory 10% provision.

Sound proof.

Our Acoustics experts created an acoustic model of one of the courtrooms in order to identify the optimum locations and area of acoustic absorptive treatment. This modelling meant the design criteria was met and the room achieved S28 reverberation time criteria – a solution that was then implemented across the other nine courtrooms throughout the building. Come construction stage, the team also supported the process with monitoring services to ensure all design specifications were implemented properly.
