New carbon-saving lighting approach
New report on circular lighting approach to office fit outs
100,000 usable light fittings are removed and only a small percentage of these are recycled every week as basic, Cat-A office lights are replaced by Cat-B lighting that better fits the needs of tenants.
However, we are calling for a more circular design approach to lighting.
Our report, “Beyond disposable lighting design” which is published today, recommends fitting out show floors to reduce the volume of lighting fitted at the early Cat-A stage, designing a minimal Cat-A lighting scheme that can be scaled or adapted, using remanufactured lighting and designing in flexibility to make changing the use of the space over time easier to do.
We evaluated how using these design approaches singularly or in tandem versus the current Cat-A approach affect the whole life carbon over the life of a building with multiple tenant changes and found significant potential savings.
The report calls for our industry to rethink how we use materials and components, recommending reuse first, rather than consistently extracting more of the earth’s resources.
