Why location matters for science to thrive
The impact of Liverpool’s unique environment on science and research
Liverpool’s commitment to science and research is reflected in years of investment in state-of-the-art facilities, creating collaborative hubs across the region with generative spaces facilitating innovation. Our team of engineers and specialists has been instrumental in helping several significant projects take shape in the city and we’re still involved in helping maintain Liverpool’s position as a science and research hub.
Alder Hey Hospital opened in 2015, and has become one of Europe’s largest children’s hospitals. This has opened up opportunities for researchers from several universities including Liverpool University and Liverpool John Moores University to collaborate in ground breaking research, positioning it as a pioneer in children’s healthcare.
We are continuing to work with the hospital, and are currently collaborating with Morgan Sindall, Gilling Dodd Architects and A&B Engineering as part of the team delivering the new Neonatal Intensive Care facility. This new build extension in collaboration with Liverpool Women’s Hospital, will extend critical care capacity for neonates whilst providing cutting edge care and support for parents.
The Liverpool Institute of Child Health and Wellbeing launched by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in Oct 2024 is a recent example of research collaboration between the University of Liverpool and Alder Hey Hospital. It is clear that Alder Hey Hospital will continue to benefit the Liverpool region into the future, with advancements in children’s healthcare potentially impacting much further afield.
Another key hub in Liverpool is Sci Tech Daresbury which continues to grow at its purpose-built campus that encompasses a cluster of unique and diverse buildings set within carefully landscaped surroundings. Sci tech continue to drive forward diverse areas of research, including biotechnology, physics, health sciences and AI/digital. The campus is the Northern home for the Science and technology facilities council and operates as an incubator for new startups as well as a workspace for established business. Sci tech has ambitious plans to further develop the campus far into the future.
Campuses such as Sci Tech Daresbury, the Liverpool Science Park and Paddington Village offer collaborative spaces across the region for innovators and entrepreneurs and foster a dynamic environment where ideas can flourish; this is crucial in attracting top talent and enabling groundbreaking discoveries that have a tangible impact on society.
As designers and technical specialists we play our part in creating spaces that work, spaces that provide sustainable strategies to suit the activities being undertaken in what are often bespoke facilities.
Whether high containment laboratories, medical research facilities or welcoming support spaces, each building requires careful thought to ensure that it achieves the goal of creating a great space for amazing people leading to incredible discoveries.
