Turning ethos into action.
Our Property Services team was initially appointed by the University of Westminster’s sustainability manager to ensure that the institution was complying with energy legislation and producing Display Energy Certificates (DEC). Following on from this role, the wider challenge set by the client was to help the university really demonstrate a commitment to its sustainable ethos by making impactful changes.
Smart metering matters.
We knew we could provide practical recommendations to improve the energy consumption of the buildings across the portfolio. However, before we could make suggestions for improvements, we needed to understand the current situation and energy use.
From our initial studies it was identified that the metering management across the portfolio needed an upgrade if it was to provide the accurate and meaningful data required. Following this, the university implemented the metering strategy we advised. The result? Much more accurate and useful energy data for billing and analysis.
Real change.
On the back of the DEC analysis we had undertaken, we worked closely with the sustainability manager to identify areas where real changes could be made. As well as the metering strategy we proposed, our other key suggestion was undertaking a portfolio-wide lighting analysis. This led to the university implementing VSD drives across some of their sites and rolling out LED lighting with improved controls.
These changes all add up to significant improvements to the university’s overall energy consumption, saving costs, but more importantly putting its sustainable ethos into action.
