Excellence, from local to Olympic level.

The Wales National Velodrome is a 500-seat indoor cycle track built to meet international cycling standards.

Supporting sporting success.

As the headquarters of the Welsh Cycle Union, it has hosted training for the Olympic cycling teams and has additional facilities for local cycle clubs. The facility houses an inclined 250-metre cycle track and an indoor sports area – it also includes a fitness suite, drug testing area, and banqueting space.

Newport City Council had high ambitions set out in its brief. Not only were we challenged to develop an international-standard sports facility and centre of excellence for Wales, but we also needed to ensure the facility could adapt to provide local cycling and sports facilities to maximise its use.

Sight and sound.

We designed all of the electrical services, including the cycle track lighting, to international standards. Our MEP and lighting systems in the facility are zoned; this allows for maximum flexibility according to how the facility is being used – either at one time or in tandem.

As well as our MEP work, we also brought our event sound expertise to the project. Our MEP engineers and Acoustics team worked in collaboration on the development to ensure that the zoning will work for multiple events, without the acoustic experience being compromised.

The support that the venue has provided for the British cycling team has been recognised as playing a key role in its Olympic gold medal success.
