I was sponsored throughout college by a national M&E contractor and achieved a degree in environmental engineering from Southbank University. This excellent grounding in a contracting environment proved to be invaluable as my career path took me into the consultancy world. I joined Hoare Lea in 1994, becoming a partner in 2005. My current role includes management responsibility for the Cardiff office as well as leading the Hotel sector for the practice as a whole. I enjoy the daily challenges that we face – bringing buildings and communities to life, but yet in a functional and sustainable way.
Engineering human experiences.
It is always fantastic to see important, life-changing projects come to fruition. The Children’s Hospital for Wales was one such occasion. It was the culmination of nationwide fundraising, collaborative teamwork and great design. They all came together to create a truly outstanding facility – an environment built around healing, helping to treat sick children from across the country.
Biggest challenge.
In 2013, I was part of a 13-strong group of fundraisers who raised more than £50k for a prostate cancer charity desperately requiring funding for a new robotic laser. We took on – and achieved – the challenge of climbing five volcanoes within two weeks in Ecuador. A very rewarding experience and a reminder that all the issues we face daily both at home and in the workplace are not really issues at all.
