We declare: a climate & biodiversity emergency.

12/07/2019

Matching words with action.

We are one of the first signatories to support the Building Services Engineers Declare initiative.

We recognise that climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are two of the most serious issues of our time.

For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries demands a paradigm shift in current behaviour. Together with our clients, we will need to commission, design and maintain buildings, cities and infrastructure as part of a self-sustaining system in balance with the natural world.

The research, expertise and design solutions exist for us to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will.

Recognising this, we are committing to strengthen our working practices to create building services engineering outcomes that have more positive impact on the world around us.

The statement includes advocacy for:

  • Raising awareness of the climate and biodiversity emergencies among our clients, collaborators and supply chains.
  • Encouraging clients to adopt a whole life carbon reduction approach.
  • Sharing knowledge and research.
  • Improving resource efficiency in our designs.

Architects and structural engineers have declared similar statements:

A better future.

We are proud to advocate change and aim to work with government, clients and the construction sector to achieve a net zero carbon future with more protection for biodiversity.

We will continue to lead by example across a range of related industry-wide initiatives. These include our sponsorship and steering group involvement in the UKGBC Advancing Net Zero programme (which provides a framework for net zero carbon development) and the Design for Performance initiative (which aims to significantly improve energy efficiency of commercial buildings and increase transparency of carbon emissions).

If not now, when? If not you, who?
