Influencing health & wellbeing outcomes in planning & design.

It is well established that high quality design in new developments can have a large influence on health and wellbeing outcomes.

However, predicting these outcomes is complex. There are a large number of possible impact pathways, resulting from interactions with various ‘determinants of health’.

Attention has most recently been given to widening health inequalities, particularly in light of the current global health pandemic.

The RTPI research paper ‘Enabling healthy placemaking’, is calling for the greater use of Health Impact Assessment in planning applications as an important step towards the implementation of healthy place-making outcomes in planning decisions.
