After completing my Building Environmental Engineering degree at Bath University, I joined Hoare Lea as a Design Engineer. I have enjoyed developing my career in building services, as both a Partner of the firm and as Head of Research and Development (R&D).
Engineering human experiences.
A significant project for me was the performing arts BRIT school in Croydon. It’s designed for flexibility, with a modular approach to the engineering systems that enables the school and its spaces to adapt easily to changing needs. Over the years it has had a number of famous alumni: Adele, Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis, Jessie J. and Rizzle Kicks. Even I have heard of some of them… although don’t ask me to name any song titles!
R&D is about innovative ideas and thinking. It requires us to develop an understanding of the context and the impact of changes and developments. This is always a challenge with every new theme that arises. My approach has been one of immersion in the subject: Google alerts coupled with conferences and lots of reading, and – most importantly – ordering my thoughts by presenting and writing on the subject.
