Our people

Phil Grew

Director

It wasn’t until I found Hoare Lea during a placement year that I realised my future lay in building services. I felt uninspired studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering, but found I enjoyed the ‘physicality’ of working in the built environment. Being able to influence building design and performance through engineering solutions worked for me.

A defining moment.

Through my project profile, I’m proud to have influenced the urban regeneration agenda; reinventing places for people to live, work, shop and relax. I lead the direction of our work in the retail-led mixed-use sector, on large-scale projects that transform cities and towns – such as the new ‘district’ proposed by the Earls Court Masterplan. I am proud to sit on the Revo (BCSC) technical committee and also to have been invited onto the Revo Gold Awards judging panel.

Biggest engineering challenge.

One of our most complex challenges as a firm was the award-winning Cabot Circus in Bristol. Ten years in the making, the project pushed boundaries achieving many ‘retail firsts’ – open covered streets, and a new standard practice for moving a large volume of data systems onto a common network to name but a few. It won us ‘Best Use of IT’ at the Building Service Awards, and achieved the first BREEAM Excellent rating in the UK retail sector.
