The travelling engineer.

Having joined our firm as a graduate, Birju is now based in Bristol working as an Electrical Engineer. He loves to travel and his professional life at Hoare Lea also involves international locations, working on projects across London, Madrid, and Dubai.

I got into engineering because…

I love to fix things. From a young age I would try to understand what was wrong when something didn’t work in the house, and then I would really enjoy trying to solve it. As I got older and I started to think about choosing a career and engineering seemed like the logical choice. So here I am – a building services engineer!

From a young age I would try and understand what was wrong when something didn’t work in the house, and then I would really enjoy trying to fix it.

My first project involved…

working on an office next to Buckingham Palace. I just remember thinking ‘wow, no project can top this!’ However, following this I have been involved in the designs for the highly prestigious Dubai Expo 2020, so it has just got more and more interesting!

The most challenging and exciting project I’ve worked on is…

Dubai Expo 2020. The deadlines and quality of work were very demanding, but it was also highly rewarding. I was proud to go to Dubai and present our designs to Laing O’Rourke using virtual reality. It was great to see their expressions and witness how the technology engaged them. It added another dimension to the project for me and made all of the hard work really worthwhile.

When I am not working…

I am never happier than when I am travelling. My latest escapade took me to Sri Lanka, where I was lucky enough to go kayaking and also visited an elephant orphanage. Luckily for me, the elephants were in a pleasant mood that day!

What really excites me about the industry today…

is the sheer scale of innovation going on – not only the solutions we deliver for our clients, but also the technologies impacting how we do our jobs on a day-to-day basis. Our roles themselves are evolving and tools such as Revit are helping us work in a more efficient and productive way.
