Our people: Nicola Bagshawe

Making an impact.

Nicola joined us as a graduate in 2005 and has been with the firm ever since. Now a Senior Associate, she has worked in both our London and Bournemouth offices, with the latter now her permanent base.

I got into engineering because…

as humans we all search for shelter from the elements, and I love how my job allows me to turn what is essentially a building shell into an environment that people can live and work in; especially when they go beyond meeting just our physiological needs.

I moved to our London office for a while…

and was quickly welcomed and considered part of the team from day one. My time in London involved working on one of my most challenging projects: a new building for the department of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Greenwich. It’s a stunning building, with fully exposed services, night-time cooling with high thermal mass and displacement ventilation. Inter-office collaboration really inspires me and I hope one day that we have a graduate programme that offers secondments to each of our offices around the organisation.

I’m passionate about what I do; I love the environment and, importantly, that my job gives me an opportunity to have an impact in this area.

I’m a really motivated STEM Ambassador…

I truly enjoy promoting engineering to school pupils – opening their eyes to the possibilities a career in this area can hold. I was involved in setting up a work experience programme, which has been really well-received and we’re looking into rolling this out around the firm. Inspiring future generations of building services engineers is so important and our ‘Adopt A School’ initiative started with us visiting local schools, giving presentations, and offering advice. Over time this evolved into the 50-strong STEM Ambassador group we have now!

In 2012 I moved back to the Bournemouth office…

and since then I’ve gotten married and had two children. I was promoted to Senior Associate after my first maternity and I’m now just two months back from my second maternity leave, and loving what I do.
